Introduction <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Background radiation refers to the natural radiation that is present in our surroundings and comes from various sources. This radiation is present everywhere on earth and can come from both natural and man-made sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Natural background radiation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The natural background radiation refers to the radiation we receive from natural sources in our surroundings. The global average value is estimated to be around 2.4 mSv\/year [1, 2].<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some areas in Iran, India and certain parts of Europe are known to have natural background radiation that can result in over 100 mSv\/year. This is due to geological conditions or natural occurrences of radioactive materials in the soil and surroundings of these specific locations. Some negative health effects have been observed in humans in these areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cosmic radiation <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Cosmic radiation comes predominantly from the Sun, the explosion of stars (supernovae) and other distant galactic sources. They constantly bombard the Earth’s atmosphere and reach the surface contributing to external natural background radiation [3].<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The global average dose from cosmic radiation at sea level is roughly 0.30 millisievert (mSv) per year. The value increases with height. In Denver 1,600 m.a.s.l. you receive around 0.9mSv\/year [4].<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Radon <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Radon is a colorless and odorless gas that forms as a decay product of natural uranium and thorium in the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Estimates of the global average annual dose from radon typically range from 1 to 10 millisieverts (mSv) per year. Doses vary considerably from place to place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man-made background radiation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Anthropogenic background radiation refers to the radiation that human activities contribute to, in addition to the natural background radiation. It makes up very little of the total background radiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This radiation originates from man-made sources, such as medical diagnostics and treatment, industrial activities, power plants, nuclear tests, and radioactive materials used in research and industrial processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medical sources<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Radiation used in medicine is one of the largest sources of human radiation exposure. X-rays, CT scans, radiation therapy, and other medical procedures involving the use of ionizing radiation contribute to anthropogenic background radiation. These procedures are used for diagnosis, treatment and research in medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
