As you go away from the sun, solar panels struggle to gather enough energy to run a spacecraft or probe, and chemical rocket fuel tanks would just be too big. Many famous missions depended on nuclear energy (Cassini, Mars Rover, Voyager, etc.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image uagb-block-7e8eb4f7 wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-none\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" srcset=\" \" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 150px\" src=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"\" height=\"\" title=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"nuclear-isotopes-in-space\">Nuclear isotopes in space<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/whatisnuclear.com\/img\/solar-system-insolence.png\" alt=\"Solar system sun\" title=\"Solar system sun\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Cassini, rovers, etc. have been powered by something called a radioisotopic thermal generator (RTG). These devices use radioactive isotopes produced in nuclear reactors on Earth (usually Plutonium-238) coupled to a device that can convert heat directly to electricity. RTGs are kind of like really long-lived batteries that can provide tens or hundreds of Watts for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"nuclear-reactors-in-space\">Nuclear reactors in space<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nuclear reactors can be used in space to produce heat, electricity, and\/or propulsion.
