Due to the fact that a <a _istranslated=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/whatisnuclear.com\/reactor_history.html\">huge number of somewhat exotic reactor types were built and tested in the 1950s and 1960s, the<\/a> term is somewhat misleading and complex. Depending on who you talk to, advanced reactors can mean a number of quite different things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><font _mstmutation=\"1\"><\/font><strong>Definition 1: Reactors that incorporated hard-learned lessons from the past into the design<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These advanced reactors have incorporated real-world, experience-informed lessons learned from previous versions of any given reactor to make them into newer, better, more optimized models. They generally have been built before, have existing supply chains, have licenses from the regulators, and are sitting around ready for people to purchase them. Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><font _mstmutation=\"1\"><\/font><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>GEH\u2019s Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Westinghouse\u2019s Advanced Passive 1000 (AP1000)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>KEPCO&#8217;s Advanced Power Reactor 1400 (APR-1400)<font _mstmutation=\"1\"><\/font><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Definition 2: Reactors that, once built, could theoretically have extended capabilities beyond modern LWRs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These advanced reactors have characteristics designed to enhance the performance beyond the (already stellar) capabilities of the workhorse reactor fleet of light-water reactors (LWRs). Such advancements may include:<font _mstmutation=\"1\"><\/font><font _mstmutation=\"1\"><\/font><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ability to get more energy out of any given mass of nuclear fuel by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/whatisnuclear.com\/recycling.html\">breeding plutonium or U-233<\/a>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/whatisnuclear.com\/fast-reactor.html\">Uranium-Plutonium breeders<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/whatisnuclear.com\/thorium.html\">Thorium-Uranium breeders<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ability to reach higher coolant temperatures to:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Have higher heat-to-electricity conversion (thermal efficiency)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supply industrial heat to replace fossil heat sources in hard-to-decarbonize chemical\/industrial processes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remove\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/whatisnuclear.com\/decay-heat.html\">afterglow heat<\/a>\u00a0indefinitely after a shutdown without any backup power required to improve safety in extreme conditions (e.g. large regional power outages). This generally requires better connections to ambient heat sinks and\/or special coolants like liquid metal or molten salt.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ability to be constructed without as many schedule delays or cost overruns, e.g. by incorporating elements of modular construction\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Large equipment module built-in factory and installed at the site (e.g. AP1000 modular construction)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reactor systems built in a factory and shipped to the site and installed in field-constructed buildings (e.g. NuScale SMR)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><font _mstmutation=\"1\" _msttexthash=\"9190974\" _msthash=\"505\"><font _mstmutation=\"1\" _msttexthash=\"548327\" _msthash=\"3827\">Entire plant systems were <\/font>built in the factory and rail\/trucks are <\/font>shipped to the <font _mstmutation=\"1\" _msttexthash=\"9190974\" _msthash=\"505\"><font _mstmutation=\"1\" _msttexthash=\"9624836\" _msthash=\"3827\">site for turnkey operation (e.g. microreactors like the Army&#8217;s <\/font><a _mstmutation=\"1\" _istranslated=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ML-1\">ML-1<\/a><\/font>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><font _mstmutation=\"1\"><\/font><em _msttexthash=\"205907\" _msthash=\"1303\"><strong>Generation-IV<\/strong><\/em><font _mstmutation=\"1\" _msttexthash=\"25168\" _msthash=\"1304\"><strong> Vs. <\/strong><\/font><em _msttexthash=\"109174\" _msthash=\"1305\"><strong>Advanced<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><font _mstmutation=\"1\"><\/font>Related to definition 2, in 2000, experts in the international nuclear power community came together in the Generation-IV International Forum (GIF) to help guide the industry&#8217;s path forward. Over 100 experts looked through 130 reactor types proposed and chose <a _istranslated=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gen-4.org\/gif\/jcms\/c_40465\/generation-iv-systems\">the 6 most promising reactor types<\/a> that they agreed had high potential to reach higher performance in <a _istranslated=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gen-4.org\/gif\/jcms\/c_40472\/technology-goals\">8 specific technology goals, listed here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gen-4.org\/gif\/\">GIF project page<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Generation_IV_reactor#Generation_IV_International_Forum\">GIF Wikipedia page<\/a><font _mstmutation=\"1\"><\/font><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><font _mstmutation=\"1\" _msttexthash=\"1533922\" _msthash=\"518\"><strong>Advanced<\/strong> <em _msttexthash=\"116285\" _msthash=\"1576\" _mstmutation=\"1\" _istranslated=\"1\"><strong _istranslated=\"1\">Reactors<\/strong><\/em><font _mstmutation=\"1\" _msttexthash=\"366379\" _msthash=\"1577\" _istranslated=\"1\"><strong _istranslated=\"1\"> vs. Advanced Reactor <\/strong><\/font><em _msttexthash=\"115830\" _msthash=\"1578\" _mstmutation=\"1\" _istranslated=\"1\"><strong _istranslated=\"1\">Concepts<\/strong><\/em> <font _mstmutation=\"1\" _msttexthash=\"109174\" _msthash=\"1575\" _istranslated=\"1\"><strong _istranslated=\"1\"> <\/strong><\/font><\/font><font _mstmutation=\"1\"><\/font><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><font _mstmutation=\"1\" _msttexthash=\"6672822\" _msthash=\"3743\">The discussion around nuclear reactor types has struggled since the early 1950s to differentiate between the <\/font><em _istranslated=\"1\">purported benefits<\/em> of conceptual reactors and the <em _istranslated=\"1\">actual performance<\/em><font _mstmutation=\"1\" _msttexthash=\"26725166\" _msthash=\"1603\"> of built-and-operating real reactors. Admiral Rickover most famously summarized the situation in his paper Reactors vs. practical Reactors memo, which sharply criticized people who promoted the hypothetical benefits of <\/font><a _istranslated=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/whatisnuclear.com\/rickover.html\">reactors<\/a> that were not yet built over reactor projects that were in construction or operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many senses, <em _istranslated=\"1\">advanced<\/em> reactors as used in modern discussions are basically identical to the <em _istranslated=\"1\">academic reactors<\/em> Rickover referred to way back in 1953.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><font _mstmutation=\"1\"><\/font><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image uagb-block-decd4576 wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-none\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/rpmanetworks.com\/AtomkraftCloneSite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/55-1024x442.jpg\" data-sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 150px\" data-src=\"https:\/\/rpmanetworks.com\/AtomkraftCloneSite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/55-1024x442.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"uag-image-25805 lazyload\" width=\"1024\" height=\"442\" title=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/442;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Basically, anyone can <em _istranslated=\"1\">say<\/em> that their reactor is way better than others that people have tried, but there&#8217;s no reason to believe them even a little until they can point to one that&#8217;s operating and show you how well it works. This is easy to forget in a world with significant VC energy funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Legal Definitions of Advanced Reactors<\/strong><font _mstmutation=\"1\"><\/font><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><font _mstmutation=\"1\"><\/font><font _mstmutation=\"1\" _msttexthash=\"34579402\" _msthash=\"528\"><font _mstmutation=\"1\" _msttexthash=\"1612897\" _msthash=\"2127\" _istranslated=\"1\">Some countries have written legal definitions <\/font>of <em _msttexthash=\"312299\" _msthash=\"2128\" _mstmutation=\"1\" _istranslated=\"1\">Advanced Reactors<\/em><font _mstmutation=\"1\" _msttexthash=\"4963010\" _msthash=\"2129\" _istranslated=\"1\"> as part of providing government support to some reactors but not others.
